EVENT: Economic Development Listening Date: 2014-09-22
City: 166 Railroad Street, St. J Contact: Rep. Michelle Fay
Phone: 802-535-1463 Contact Email: michellebfay@gmail.com
Event Description: State officials will be in St. Johnsbury on Monday, September 22nd for an Economic Development Listening Forum hosted by State Representatives Michelle Fay and Bob South. The event will take place at 166 Railroad Street, the former Mill River Furniture store in St. Johnsbury from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Speaker of the House Shap Smith will be joined by Lucy Leriche, Deputy Secretary of the Agency of Commerce and Community Development, Rep. Jim Masland of Thetford, and Rep. Sam Young of Glover. According to event organizer Rep. Michelle Fay, panelists were selected based on their policy expertise and sensitivity to the economic development opportunities available to our region. “Jim serves on the Ways and Means Committee, which sets the tax policy in the House. He also represents towns that border New Hampshire, so he’s well positioned to hear and understand concerns about doing business along the Connecticut River.” Rep. Young serves on the Commerce Committee, and oversees the rollout of affordable statewide broadband services as a member of the Vermont Telecommunications Authority board. The event is designed for residents to share ideas and ask questions on topics ranging from tax policy to the effectiveness of Vermont’s economic development programs. Fay notes that legislative priorities are established now, in the months leading up to the new biennium. “Bringing the Speaker of the House to St. Johnsbury gives our community a voice in setting the agenda for the coming session. It’s important for Montpelier to hear St. Johnsbury needs in order to promote sustainable economic development, cultivate the creative economy and spotlight our region’s assets." Two additional forums are being planned for October on the topics of health care and education. For more information contact Rep. Fay at 748-1291 or visit www.fayforstj.com.
